BASSENDEAN COMMUNITY CALLS ON
WA PREMIER TO FUND JUBILEE RESERVE
January 17, 2025
The Bassendean community calls on the WA Labor Premier Roger Cook to include Jubilee Reserve in the $30 million election commitment towards female sports.
Teenage girls are forced to share showers and change rooms with their adult male club mates at the Bassendean Amateur Football Club, while the junior club has stopped registering girls because of the same safety concerns.
The situation is so dire the club committee members have to station volunteers at the changeroom door to supervise the entrance while girls get changed.
The ageing Stan Moses club at Jubilee Reserve in Bassendean has been described by senior representatives of the club as the worst facilities in the competition, where 'Away' clubs are also forced to share male and female facilities.
The Stan Moses Pavilion was built in 1979 and appears virtually unchanged since this time and no longer fit for purpose. When developed, nearly half a century ago, no provision was made for a building replacement fund.
In more recent years the local government has started putting aside money to fund upgraded facilities, but the local community and Council have also been seeking funding contributions from the other tiers of government to make this project a reality, without success.
Three years ago the Junior league made the difficult decision to stop registering girls into the Bassendean Football club, meaning girls who want to play football have nowhere to play.
Male and female umpires are also forced to share space to change in the upstairs hall, the women given privacy with a partition.
Comments from Renee McLennan:
“It’s unacceptable to see the Labor Government’s $30 million package for changerooms, equipment, and events to boost women’s and girls’ participation in community sport overlook Jubilee Reserve. This project has been a top priority since the Jubilee Reserve Masterplan was developed with the community back in 2021”.
This is a clear example of Bassendean’s issues being neglected by the state government, despite the community’s tireless advocacy. That’s why we need an independent representative, free from party politics, to keep our community’s priorities front and centre”.
Comments from senior representatives of the club:
"People don’t want to be in this environment, so fewer and fewer are coming. Falling revenue and volunteer numbers has people fearful for the future of the club, which will turn 100 in five years, a centenary that will make it the first community football club in Perth to reach the milestone."
“Despite increasing demand, we’ve stopped taking girls due to the safety concerns related to the bathroom & changerooms”.
“We feel embarrassed when away teams come and compete.”
"A lot of clubs have been upgraded and we are probably the last."
The community is calling on the State Government to fund the upgrades as a matter of urgency.
The Jubilee Reserve Masterplan was developed by the Town of Bassendean:
-
The total project cost as per the updated cost plan is $7,187,119.
-
The Town has committed funds of $2,000,000 to the project.
-
The Town is seeking government support of $5,187,119.
To date the State Government has not committed any funds to the project.
